Question:

I am an editor on a film and i have a huge amount of MXF files that i need editing in FCP, how can I import it into FCP directly? Is there anything I need to do before editing? Forget to tell that the files are from a P2 camera that given by my workmates.

Panasonic P2 camera outputs MXF files which is encoded by DVCPRO. You can import footage into Final Cut Pro directly from a P2 card by using a P2 card reader. Final Cut Pro sees the P2 card as a volume and also sees the path to the card. Here is a detail guide to help you.

Importing P2 Footage into Final Cut Pro directly from a P2 card

If you have already copied the MXF files from the P2 card to your hard drive and unfortunately you have not keep the original structure, in this case you will need convert the MXF files to FCP preferred ProRes format so that you can edit it in FCP. Pavtube MXF converter for Mac could help you. It is the only one I have been able to find that can fetch the individual MXF files out of their subfolders as a batch and convert to FCP friendly format. See the How-to guide:

Step 1. Install and run this P2 MXF to Final Cut Pro X converter, add your video files.

Step 2. Click on “Format”, select “Final Cut Pro” category, then choose “Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)”.

Tips. The video and codecs are all from the FCP X you installed into your Mac, so the output quality is FCP X level.

Step 3. Start converting P2 mxf to FCP X by clicking “convert”.

When the process is finished, import the converted video file to FCP X for editing. That’s it. vey Easy.
